I first came across the work of Spencer Tunick when studying creative arts at uni. Piles of bodies, undulating skin and flesh everywhere, nudity en masse amidst city sites and natural landscapes, and the beauty of the human form, beyond individual identity. I never thought I'd get the opportunity to be in one of his photographs! But come to Brisbane he did as part of Melt Festival and myself and my husband along with 5500 other intrepid locals took to the Story Bridge at 2.00am one Sunday morning in October and took our clothes off.
I loved every second. The sense of unity and celebration... laying down the mantle of the personal self... the cold dawn rain as we lay naked on the bitumen and painted white lines with goosebumps all over and our hair in puddles... the wonder of different bodies and different shapes and different genitals and different ages and birthmarks and tattoos and butt scars and smiles, everywhere I looked, radiant smiles... bumping into new friends and old friends you haven't seen in years nude on the Story Bridge... feeling part of the world around me, the unhindered and natural belonging of the birthday suit. Some pics and an ABC news vid below...
