The basic problem is that nothing is being done to halt or even slow climate & ecological breakdown despite all the beautiful words & promises
This digital work is an attempt to observe some of the many conflicting and opposing messages in the world between development, comfort and climate change. It raises questions about the rightful place of personal responsibility and individual impact in a societal structure designed to protect the status quo and the rights of the wealthy. It wonders out loud how to find a safe place to rest between the polar states of despair, helplessness and empowered action, how to take action in the face of disagreement, disregard, denial and minimisation of the issue and perhaps most of all, how to connect with the earth beneath the cement, cars, destruction and endless progress to find peace with what is.
The basic problem is that nothing is being done to halt or even slow climate & ecological breakdown despite all the beautiful words & promises consists of two large scale colour posters based on archival materials from the early days of the development of Caloundra in the southern Sunshine Coast region of Queensland. The original posters advertise land sales and were sourced from the State Library of Queensland (Central Caloundra promotional poster 1884?) and the Sunshine Coast Heritage Library (Caloundra Beach 1926). This work looks at two recent players that have made waves all over the world: Greta Thunberg and the school strikes and Extinction Rebellion. Photographic images have been sourced from Greta Thunberg's facebook page, XR and XRSEQ on facebook and Aura City of Colour promotional materials.
Access high resolution images below of both the original archival material and my posters:
