VIS120 Major project: proposal + timeline

Proposed topic / project name:

The project name is unknown at this point (current working title is “The Poster Thing”). Primarily the project will be recording directly with drawing as decoration secondly.

Overall description:

The Poster Thing will consist of drawings that celebrate the place where I live: Springbrook, Queensland in the Gold Coast hinterland. It will include waterfalls, rock pools, dense rainforest, ancient rock, views, massive trees, leaves, fungi, birds, animals, insects, reptiles and much more.

The project will be a large-scale poster drawn in the style of visionary and doodle art. It will be richly detailed and aim to capture the extraordinary and at times overwhelming amount of variety and life found at Springbrook. It will be drawn in black technical pen, dense and packed full of intricacies. The eyes won’t know where to look and every time you look at it, you’ll see something new - just like the rainforest.

The heart of the project is a desire to reconnect with a personal history of making art while under the influence of psychedelic drugs in my teens and early 20s. It felt sacred drawing in that state, timeless, meditative and right. I hope to reconnect with that gift and give myself permission / to re-learn how to become fully absorbed in what I’m doing regardless of what family life is asking of me or what craziness is happening. I also want to create a memento of this beautiful place. We’ll be leaving soon and I want something to take with me that reminds me how blessed I am to have called this place home.
