Without a Story

Without a Story is comprised of ten digital monochromatic art works. A physical artwork, digitally photographed and altered, becomes a triptych of tonal backgrounds threaded with fine horizontal lines and layered with compositions of rectangles, squares and circles.

Some say grief refines the soul and brings us closer to the truth of life. We are driven into questioning how we continue to live when everyone and everything we love dies and when all connection with meaning and hope is lost. In grief, story falls away leaving emptiness. Without a Story holds space for nothingness to exist without attempting to change it or replace it with a brighter, more positive narrative. The dense black lines and circles are simply present and extend an invitation to transcend the personal and be without a story.

As a contemporary response to abstract minimalism (in particular the work of Mark Rothko, Agnes Martin and Sol LeWitt), the movement of simple geometric shapes and lines into the digital world, echoes the infinite in a way three dimensional reality does not. Separated from the effects of time and the physical reality of both maker and viewer, Without a Story contemplates what's beyond individual thought and memory, the body and it's history and beyond place and personal feeling.
